Lead Mechanical Engineer

Contract Length: 6 months
Rate: £70/hour (Umbrella, Inside IR35)
Hours: 37 hours per week
On-site Requirement: Majority of the time on-site
Overview: We are looking for a Lead Mechanical Engineer to act as the Design Authority for a next-generation radar development programme at BAE Systems. In this senior role, you’ll provide both hands-on technical expertise and leadership to a small team of mechanical and CAD engineers, ensuring successful design, integration, and delivery of complex mechanical systems.

Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as Mechanical Design Authority for a future radar demonstrator product.
- Lead and mentor a small team of engineers.
- Own and approve key mechanical design decisions across the project lifecycle.
- Drive the design, build, test, and integration of complex mechanical systems.
- Engage in hands-on analysis (e.g., FEA, CFD) and reviews.
- Collaborate closely with the Project Engineering Manager, Project Manager, and Technical Authority.
- Provide subject matter expertise in areas such as composites, thermal management, or structural design.
- Ensure compliance with safety, engineering standards, and lifecycle requirements.
- Use tools such as SAP PDM for design data management.
- Proven experience in mechanical design for complex engineering systems.
- Deep expertise in one or more of the following: composites, CFD, FEA, structures, propulsion, or thermal systems.
- Strong understanding of mechanical behaviours under static and dynamic load, shock, and vibration.
- Experience leading or mentoring engineering teams.
- Familiarity with engineering lifecycle from requirements through to in-service support.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent experience.
