Principal Engineer – Electrical Engineering (Power Electrics)
Location: Barrow-in-Furness / Hybrid
Contract Length: 12 month contract
The Role
Join BAE Systems as a Principal Engineer – Electrical Engineering (Power Electrics) and play a key role in developing and verifying complex electrical systems for the next generation of submarine technologies. You’ll act as a technical authority within the Compatibility Test Facility (CTF) team, ensuring system integrity, design assurance, and continuous learning across our programmes.
What you’ll be doing
Knowledge and experience in:
You’ll join the Compatibility Test Facility (CTF) Team – a small, focused group supporting the wider Electrical Power Systems function. The team verifies and troubleshoots designs in real-time, providing valuable feedback to improve system maturity and defect resolution across the Submarine Systems North Atlantic (SSNA) programme.

You’ll act as a technical authority within the Compatibility Test Facility (CTF) team, ensuring system integrity, design assurance, and continuous learning across our programmes.
What you’ll be doing
- Acting as engineering and technical authority for CTF system design and verification.
- Providing technical leadership, guidance and oversight to ensure system maturity and design integrity.
- Developing, promoting and sharing innovative technologies and lessons learned across the business.
- Undertaking technical and document reviews in support of system qualification, build, test and commissioning.
- Defining qualification obligations and ensuring the adequacy and robustness of supporting safety documentation.
- Leading fault-finding and issue resolution activities, providing real-time feedback to wider engineering teams.
- Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to ensure requirements are fully supported and incorporated.
Knowledge and experience in:
- Electrical equipment design, installation, commissioning, and through-life testing.
- System integration and the impacts of equipment changes on wider systems.
- Submarine or similar complex system development and integration.
- Ability to mature designs from concept to build.
- Strong analytical and fault-finding capabilities.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills with suppliers and internal teams.
- Experience managing configuration and change processes.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or equivalent capability (expected).
