Overview
BAE Systems is seeking an experienced Principal Software Engineer (Software Assurance) to play a key role within our Submarines Engineering function. This is a senior technical role for a motivated engineer who enjoys working autonomously, influencing technical direction, and mentoring others while delivering high‑integrity software solutions for complex, safety‑critical systems.

Overview

Responsibilities
- Leading and contributing to software requirements, design, development, testing, integration, and release
- Conducting complex technical analysis, investigations, and fault diagnosis
- Producing and reviewing software specifications, designs, implementations, and test artefacts
- Providing software assurance through robust configuration management and change control
- Performing and leading code and document reviews
- Supporting software release management activities
- Planning and reporting progress at both personal and work‑package level
- Acting as a technical authority in design and test reviews
- Supporting internal and external reviews as a Subject Matter Expert (SME)
- Coaching and mentoring junior engineers and supporting overall team capability
- Liaising with customers and supporting identification of future business opportunities
Skills & Experience
- Strong experience across multiple phases of the software lifecycle
- Expertise in software assurance, quality, and governance within complex or regulated environments
- A solid understanding of software metrics, measurements, and continuous improvement
- The ability to work autonomously on complex technical problems
- Experience coaching, mentoring, and supporting other engineers
- Confidence engaging with stakeholders at all levels, including customers
- Awareness of business strategy and relevant legal and regulatory obligation
