Location: Barrow-in-Furness (Hybrid: 2–3 days on-site per week)
Duration: 6 months (with potential extension)
Rate: £52/hr PAYE or £70.19/hr Umbrella (£519 pd Umbrella)
IR35 Status: Inside IR35
About the Role
BAE Systems Submarines is seeking two experienced Principal Structural Engineers to join their multi-functional teams in support of multiple submarine programmes. You will collaborate with cross-discipline engineers and industry partners to develop technically sound, safety-compliant, and performance-driven structural solutions.
This role offers the opportunity to develop specialist knowledge, tackle unique engineering challenges, and progress into senior engineering or management positions.

Key Responsibilities
- Design submarine structures to meet defined load cases and safety margins
- Perform structural analysis using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools (Abaqus)
- Collaborate across engineering disciplines to deliver integrated design solutions
- Produce and review technical documentation, including design/analysis reports
- Validate compliance with safety, functional, and performance standards
- Support build and manufacturing teams in resolving structural issues on-site
- Strong analytical and structural calculation skills
- Proficiency in Finite Element Analysis (preferably Abaqus)
- Submarine or shipbuilding structural design/analysis experience
- Knowledge of welding techniques and Non-Destructive Examination (NDE)
- Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively within teams
